Standing up for the "stupid and crazy" is a big theme that gets addressed in this novel, and it is one that I liked very much. It shows that there are people in this world that do care about those who aren't like everyone else. I think that it is a very good lesson for everyone because there are always people who are afraid to do what it is right. Cal is someone who I wouldn't picture being someone who is so caring because he is a jock, and mot jocks in novels or movies are always the bad guys unless it is a love story. After reading this book I realized that there needs to be more people like Cal in the world because he isn't afraid to do the right thing even if it means not doing what his friends want him to do, or showing other people that being with people like Gretchen that it is okay to be friends with them. There is always a story behind everyone that nobody understands and not many people are able to see it. This is one book that was able to show it well and was one reason why it was so enjoyable.
